New foods at New Way Deli!
Combined with hosting monthly Heart Smarts lessons and health screenings, introducing healthy menus in the deli, and sourcing local pesticide free tomatoes for customers during New Jersey's growing season, New Way Deli Market is becoming a community hub for residents to get access to health information and nutrition.
After more than doubling the healthy product inventory in his store, New Way Deli Market owner, Paul Feliz was super excited to share his idea of turning the area near the deli in his store into a health information zone "I have all this space in my store and really it could be put to better use for the community." So this past spring we created a Wellness Corner where customers can pick up resources about nutrition, health, community resources, and free health events while they wait for their deli orders. Our Ready, Set, Healthy! partners like Wellness in the Schools and Isles, Inc. contributed healthy recipe and community gardening program brochures and our health partners from Capital Health provided health information throughout the summer and the fall.
Paul also introduced fruit smoothies to his deli menu after asking his customers what healthy food would they like added to the store's deli options. Through the Trenton Healthy Corner Store Network, Paul received commercial blenders and a small chest freezer to launch his new menu of fresh blended smoothies. We taste tested a few of the new flavors--mango and mixed berry smoothies made of three ingredients-frozen fruit, 100% apple juice, and water-- at the last Heart Smarts lesson. William Mills, one of New Way Deli Market's regular customers and Heart Smarts lesson participant shared his excitement about seeing healthier menu options at the store, "I am so happy that Paul is doing this program. Most corner stores only sell unhealthy foods so it’s nice to see him support and sell healthier foods to the community."
