Revving Up Recess!!
Children love to play, and if given more equipment to keep moving, they usually will! At PJ Hill Elementary School in Trenton, the School Wellness Committee, made up of teachers and staff from PJ Hill and community partners, wanted to help increase the amount of time students were physically active during recess. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Y State Alliance/RSH! to Rutgers Cooperative Extension Department of Family & Community Health Sciences, technical assistance was provided to teachers and staff at PJ Hill who selected over 25 types of recess equipment. Among the items they selected are: footballs, soccer balls and goals, baseball bases, basketballs, yoga mats, jump ropes, hula hoops, and many others. As important as the increased physical activity the children will get during recess is, the children will also have so much fun playing with their friends!
